In either case, the goal was to increase the power of the Southern slave-holding upper class to such a degree that it could never be dislodged. states south of the Mason-Dixon line to secede and to align with other slave states to be formed from the "golden circle". Īs abolitionism in the United States grew in opposition to slavery, the KGC members proposed a separate confederation of slave states, with U.S. Mexico and Central America had no interest in being part of the United States. In Cuba, the issue was complicated by the desire of many in the colony for independence from Spain. The KGC's proposal grew out of previous unsuccessful proposals to annex Cuba ( Ostend Manifesto), parts of Central America ( Filibuster War), and all of Mexico ( All of Mexico Movement). In the United States, the new country's northern border would roughly coincide with the Mason–Dixon line, and within it were included such cities as Washington, D.C., St. In response to the increased anti-slavery agitation that followed the Dred Scott decision (1857) the Knights changed their position: the Southern United States should secede, forming their own confederation, and then invade and annex the area of the Golden Circle to vastly expand the power of the South. Originally, the KGC advocated that the new territories should be annexed by the United States, in order to vastly increase the number of slave states and thus the power of the slave-holding Southern upper classes. The country would have been centered in Havana and would have consisted of the Southern United States and a "golden circle" of territories in Mexico (which was to be divided into 25 new slave states), Central America, northern parts of South America, and Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and most other islands in the Caribbean, about 2,400 miles (3,900 km) in diameter. THE SECRET CIRCLE TV
She doesn't have a favorite TV show, because she doesn't have time to watch TV (and only owns one for playing movies). Her favorite movies are The Seven Samurai and Avatar (analyze that!). Her favorite poets are Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. Her favorite classical writer is Jane Austen. Her favorite current writer is Terry Pratchett, the author of the Discworld series, for its wild and witty satires on life, death, war, love, assassins, coppers, and Australia. The two countries she loves to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery. A militant optimist, she is also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that she likes to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters), and she has traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. She also likes to collect things: angels (they remind her of her late mother), tiny boxes from different countries or of fanciful shape, nineteenth century children's literature, and books about quantum physics-especially about the mystery of the dark energy in the universe. Once, while hiking, she saw a snow-white buck which allowed her to follow it nearly half a mile. She loves to visit a friend's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike.
THE SECRET CIRCLE FULL
She lives in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which she adores, especially with many different shades of roses. She has written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and has enjoyed writing every one of them. SMITH, Lisa Jane Smith, is the New York Times #1 Bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, Wildworld and Night World series.
